Landlords Arrested for Failing to Make Repairs after Court Held Them in Contempt

Six tenants sued landlord in a 2019 HP proceeding, seeking correction of building violations. After trial, the court ordered landlord to correct conditions so that vacate orders would be lifted within six months. Landlord also was ordered to pay each tenant $21,000 based on harassment. In 2020, DOB and tenants moved for contempt after landlord failed to make repairs. In 2021, the court found that landlord was in civil contempt of its prior order and directed landlord to perform the work required by DOB on three emergency orders.

In 2021, the court found that landlord was in civil contempt of its prior order and directed landlord to perform the work required by DOB on three emergency orders. Later the court ordered a hearing based on noncompliance and directed that two of the individual landlords be committed to civil confinement until the contempt was purged.
