Tenant Was Illegally Locked Out of Apartment

LVT Number: #27528

Tenant sued landlord, claiming illegal lockout from his apartment. Tenant had lived in the apartment for 12 years under an oral agreement. One day while tenant was outside the apartment, landlord changed the locks and didn’t give tenant access to obtain his possessions. Landlord claimed that tenant wasn’t a tenant, but landlord had sent a termination notice naming him as a tenant. Landlord locked tenant out without starting an eviction proceeding. This was a wrongful eviction and illegal lockout. The court ordered landlord to restore tenant to possession.
