Social Service Provider Responsible for Theft in Tenant's Apartment

LVT Number: #24325

Tenant sued JASA, a social service agency, and UBM, a cleaning service company, for $5,000. Tenant claimed that jewelry and other valuables were stolen from her apartment while a hoarding condition was being cleared. The court ruled that both JASA and UBM were responsible for the theft. JASA had hired UBM and was supposed to supervise its work. Tenant told the JASA caseworker where her jewelry was hidden in the apartment. The caseworker sat with tenant while UBM workers cleaned and didn't adequately supervise the work. UBM also was responsible for inadequate supervision.
