Landlord Not Liable for Building Fire

LVT Number: 13311

Tenant sued landlord, village, and another tenant for negligence after the apartment building where he lived was destroyed by fire. All claimed they weren't responsible for the fire and asked the court to dismiss the case. The court ruled in favor of landlord, the other tenant, and the village. Tenant appealed and lost. Tenant didn't submit any admissible proof that landlord or other tenant had caused the fire. And the village couldn't be responsible unless there was a special relationship between tenant and the village.
