Jury Award to Tenant Was Excessive

LVT Number: 18497

Tenant sued landlord for negligence after his apartment ceiling fell and hit him on the head. The jury ruled for tenant after a trial and awarded him $188,000 for past lost earnings. The judge reduced that amount to $2,400. Tenant appealed. The appeals court ruled for tenant in part. Landlord had admitted that tenant should get $22,000. And though the $188,000 award was too much, $2,400 wasn't enough. The appeals court awarded tenant $50,000.
