Building Bought by New York State No Longer Rent Stabilized

LVT Number: 19099

The State of New York purchased a building that contained two rent-controlled and two rent-stabilized apartments. The state's attorney asked the DHCR if these apartments were still subject to rent regulation. In an opinion letter, the DHCR said no. The rent-control and rent-stabilization laws exempt from coverage buildings owned or operated by the State of New York. But if the state sought to terminate these tenancies or restructure rents, a court would probably have to rule on those issues.
